Jorge Luis Davila Vargas won 3rd place with his image of a Collared Peccary (Dicotyles tajacu). The Collared Peccary, sometimes called a javelina in the US, is a pig-like animal, though not closely related to pig, that ranges from southwestern United States, through Mexico, Central and South America to Argentina. The Collared Peccary are herd animals and usually travel in groups of half a dozen to a dozen animals but sometimes have much larger groups. They are omnivores though most typically eat fruits, roots and other vegetation. Here in the Amazon of Peru their natural predators are pumas, jaguars, and of course, human beings.
Jorge Luis Davila Vargas ganó 3er. puesto con esta imagen de un pecarí de collar (Dicotyles tajacu), o "sajino" por su nombre regional, es un animal parecido al cerdo, aunque no está estrechamente relacionado con el cerdo, que se distribuye desde el suroeste de los Estados Unidos, a través de México, América Central y del Sur hasta Argentina. Los pecaríes de collar son animales de manada y generalmente viajan en grupos de media docena a una docena de animales, pero a veces tienen grupos mucho más grandes. Son omnívoros, aunque normalmente comen frutas, raíces y otra vegetación. Aquí en la Amazonía del Perú sus depredadores naturales son el puma, el jaguar y por supuesto el ser humano.
